October Playlist

The following songs, are a list of tracks that I could not help but have on repeat in the month of October! If you would like to hear this playlist track-by-track, head over to my tumblr page and check them out.

Own It – Drake

Do You Want To – Elle Varner

Everybody’s Something – Chance The Rapper

Royals – Lorde

Primetime – Janelle Monae

Collard Greens – ScHoolBoy Q

The District Sleeps Alone Tonight – Birdy

Show Me a Good Time – Drake

Snakes – Joey Bada$$

A few songs that were always blasting through my computer speakers or phone were: “Do You Want To” by Elle Varner, “Everybody’s Something” by Chance The Rapper and “Show Me a Good Time” by Drake. Absolutely funky classics! And the perfect songs to listen to when working on a project. Also, “Show Me a Good Time” for some reason, seemed to be my theme song whenever I went out for this month.

Also, I might have listened to “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight” by Birdy for five nights straight! Clearly, I was in my feelings, but I could not get this song out of my head!

What were your favorite tracks to listen to this month? I’m always looking for new music, so comment below!

Own It – Drake

Drake is my guilty pleasure. I really don’t want to be a fan, but I can never resist to listen to some of his songs on repeat. The latest song to receive this treatment is “Own It” which comes from his new album, Nothing Was The Same.

I stumbled upon this song via Youtube while watching an awesome choreography video by Brian Puspos, which also included a rendition of the song in the beginning of the video.

The song has the usual Drake storyline: about an ex, who either doesn’t want him anymore or whom he never completely expressed his feelings to; he tells her throughout the song that she owns all of his emotions– the main reason why I stay attached to this man. My question is, if she has all of your emotions Drake, does that include your commitment too? Of course he doesn’t mention that in the song.

One thing that I did I have a problem with in this song however was his random rant at the end about how, “N***as talk more than b****es these days.” A line that caused my right eyebrow to raise slightly higher than my left. I was getting into the groove in the song and then he just decides to include that? Nicely done Drake. It’s not his first time doing this however, other songs such as, “Trust Issues” and “Marvins Room” are all songs where Drake is the perfect gentleman to you within the first two verses and then refers to females as b****es as a closing. Which was the downside of this song for me.

Let me know what your thoughts are, I’ll give it 3 head nods.

7 Reasons Why I Love Frank Ocean

  1. He’s an artist. His lyrics are quirky, symbolic and sometimes simple- and I can appreciate that.
  2. His name.
  3. The first lines of “Thinking Bout You.”
  4. The falsettos. They’re effortless and give me goosebumps. He by far, is one of the best crooners since Usher.
  5. His songs, specifically “Thinking Bout You,” “Crack Rock,” and “The City,” are the best background tracks whenever I just need to sit and think.
  6. If any man were ever capable of crooning a Frank Ocean song to me, marriage will be considered.
  7. His songs I find just as intriguing as his personal life. And although I don’t know Frank personally, I know that his lyrics drip of the many metaphors of his life.
